BASIC COMPOSITION PART-3 aka RULE OF ODDS & LEADING LINES
Hi y'all. These blogs are about "how to capture pics in a different perspective than usual ", "how to edit them in according with our moods", "particularly how to make them better". Especially composition is everything to a photograph. And composition consists of many sub-parts. Well we can't learn them all at once, so let's take one step at a time. With that being said, let's start our baby steps into the topic. Today's topic is about COMPOSITION PART-3.
Well by reading the last 3 blogs, you would got a better idea of why frames and composition are so important. This blog is a continuation of the previous blog about COMPOSITION. Composition has so many guidelines, we saw some, now is the time to look the remaining.
RULE OF ODDS :
Well, this is the rule we may encountered but didn't realized that it is present. This rule of odds is nothing but "if you have multiple objects of same kind, it's advisable that you place odd number of that kind of subjects in the frame." Suppose if you have 4 flowers, and you want to capture them, then capture only 1 or 3 of them. Well there are some problems with rule of odds, but however, it's just a guideline not a strict rule. It's totally up to you. Once try to shoot using the rule and do the same without using the rule.
In the first picture, we can see that they used rule of thirds and rule of odds. Well, as far as human perception goes, we perceive odd number of subjects more effectively than even number. This isn't need to be true for all situations.
Remember, this rule has some problems, it's not a strict rule to follow.
LEADING LINES :
Leading lines technique is a very impressive composition technique. It'll drive you crazy when you got to know that "how much it effects the output". It can be simply put like this "While taking photograph of your main subject, try to find the objects that point/lead towards the subject. That object can be a road or a railway track or river etc. " You will get a clear picture when you see the example shots.
You see, explaining leading lines with words is a bit difficult task. But by seeing examples, you can easily understand the technique.
As you can see, in the first picture, the leading lines are indicated by red arrows. As you look closely the picture, that is the road and that line is actually the divider line. You see, in reality, we need to figure out what are the things that could act as lines, and we need to place our subject in the direction of that leading lines.
In the second picture, leading lines are actually curved. Yeah, lines need not to be always straight, as you can see, they can be curved as well.
From the third picture, we knowingly/unknowingly follow the road and we ended up looking deep into that forest road. See that's the magic of leading lines, they unknowingly lead us to look deep into the picture.
Finding these lines is actually quite a challenge. But once we find a couple of them, then we would be confident.
TAKEAWAY NOTES :
- "Rule of Odds" is a good guideline to follow. However it's still has it's own share of problems. As far as experience goes, it wouldn't be a problem.
- "Leading Lines" is a tricky one. Mastering it would give a whole new level of photographs.
- Finding those leading lines is the big task while capturing photos.
